Survival Training Unit

Survival Training

Evacuating the ship at sea is always a dangerous operation that involves risks. By practicing evacuation and survival in advance, safety of life at sea can be improved.

Meriturva's Survival Training Unit in Lohja provides safe, controlled conditions for survival exercises. In Finland's largest indoor pool and on the Ojamo lifeboat station, survival training can be practised in authentic, adaptable conditions all year round.

On board ships, rescue and evacuation drills are usually carried out in port in a hurry and are probably the biggest occupational safety risk for the crew today. Personnel rarely have the opportunity to practice the use of safety equipment in a real situation. This is possible at the Maritime Safety Rescue Unit, as the equipment in our training hall is the same as that used on ships and our simulators provide realistic, sufficiently challenging conditions for survival drills.

Education For Everyone

You don't have to be a maritime professional to train in the unique surroundings of the Survival Training Unit. Our courses benefit professional seafarers, boating enthusiasts, helicopter crews and even cruise passengers. Some courses are also suitable as a team building programme.

For example, the popularity of theSurvival Course for Boaters is growing every year. Yacht clubs and other boating enthusiasts come to Lohja to improve their safety skills and to test the functionality of their own safety equipment in a real-life situation.

The Survival Training Unit's simulator hall is an internationally unique facility designed for survival and evacuation training. The equipment selection is up-to date and versatile to cover the needs of our vast clientele.

One side of the training pool building resembles a side of a ship and it is equipped with authentic ecvacuation equipment. The training pool is equipped with a wide range of modern equipment. Exercises are carried out in variable weather conditions, under realistic conditions. At the push of a button, the pool can be whipped by the wind, a metre-long waves, rain and darkness.

The size of the pool building is so large that it is easy to get a real feel for the exercises. The large size has made it possible to acquire the latest rescue equipment, as well as to provide equipment-specific training and install evacuation systems.

Versatile Helicopter Simulators

Our unit has a unique rescue indoor helicopter simulator. The roof-mounted winch helicopter is used to practice rescuing people from the water, from liferafts and from the deck of a ship.

Survival Training Unit in Lohja is the only place in Finland that offers Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), which is survival training from a ditched, sunken helicopter. Meriturva's HUET training is not offshore approved.

In our cold water pool with its six-degree water temperature, you can learn how to protect yourself against hypothermia.

The Meriturvan lifeboat station has been built on the Ojamo mine pond in Lohja. The specialty of our life boat station is that it simulates a boat's listing as part of it lists up to 10 degrees to both directions. This makes the training and the use of equipment more realistic and challenging.

The station is even equipped with a current machinery that generates a current simulating a ship's moving in the water. Ojamo lake can be held open even in the winter, which enables training throughout the year. Meriturva has an extensive life boat fleet.

The Meriturva has four Fast Rescue Boats, a 50-person totally enclosed lifeboat, a Free Fall boat and a MOB boat for training purposes.
