Fire Training Unit

Fire fighting and survival

An accepted fire training course is a requirement for all those who seek employment on board a ship in Finland. Over the years our Fire Training Unit has trained over 60 000 mariners.

At Meriturva's Fire Training Unit one can learn smoke diving, rescue and fire extinguishing, prevention of leaks and for example breaking into a locked cabin.

Apart from the exercises, the training includes also a theory part, as well as a feedback session after the exercises. A certificate is given for an approved performance.

Selection of Training Simulators

There are several fire training simulators located at the Meriturva Fire Training Unit for different purposes. A new simulator representing a ship has recently been added to the selection. In this simulator course participants practice leading the fire extinguishing and they learn how to get by in the dark and smoke. In the tank simulators one can practice getting out of ship's bottom tanks and preventing liquid leaks. Extinguishing cabin fires is practised in a flashover simulator.

Course participants can practice extinguishing of indoor fires and entry into smoke filled spaces using self contained breathing apparatus in a fire simulator. We use fuel oil in the exercises and all waste is disposed ecologically.

Meriturva has also a unique list simulator. This simulator demonstrates impressively, how difficult it is to act when a ship has a list, as the case often is in accidents.

In Meriturva Fire Training Unit it is also possible to practice extinguishing gas fires and fixing gas leaks. Even a simulator for helicopter fires is available.

Certified Training

Meriturva Fire Training Unit offers certified basic and advanced fire training for mariners and our main clientele consists of professional seafarers. Some courses are tailor-made to match specific customer needs.

Our training fulfils the requirements of the authorities in Finland and in the EU, as well as those of the international STCW Convention and the International Maritime Organization IMO. Our quality system follows the STCW Convention and the SFS-EN ISO 9001:2000 standard requirements.

We welcome foreign guests to our training facility. Non-Finnish citizens are required to have a visitors permit to enter the Gulf of Finland Naval Command.
